About Hemorrhoid Ligation (Banding)
What are Hemorrhoids?
The term hemorrhoid refers to a condition in which the veins around the anus or lower rectum are swollen and inflamed. Hemorrhoids may result from straining to move stool. Other contributing factors include:
• pregnancy
• aging
• chronic constipation or diarrhea
Hemorrhoids can cause pain, bleeding, clots and itching. Hemorrhoids are either inside the anus (internal) or under the skin around the anus (external).
While large hemorrhoids may be removed surgically, smaller hemorrhoids can be “banded.” This is a procedure in which a small rubber band is placed around the base of the hemorrhoid, which causes the hemorrhoid tissue to die and fall off as a result of lack of blood flow. Banding may be done because of pain, excessive bleeding or if the hemorrhoid contains a blood clot.
Hemorrhoids are very common in both men and women. About half the population has hemorrhoids by age 50. Hemorrhoid ligation can often be done on an outpatient basis either in your physician’s office or at the hospital.
What Preparation do I need to do?
You may have a blood test before the procedure. You’ll need to wear comfortable clothing that’s easy to remove.
